Port Townsend's lively history is presented by characters from its past during the Victorian Festival. These new tours, conducted by talented JCHS volunteers, will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will begin at the Victorian Festival Ticket Office downtown at 540 Water Street.
Tour guides will play the role of personalities and characters that were prominent in the press over a century ago. Eras depicted in these Living History Walking Tours will teach, amuse, amaze and confound you.
The railroad is coming...the railroad is coming! Hear about the fantastic boom years when nine of our historic buildings were erected on Water Street in one year. Learn the social rules of the day for "ladies of breeding" and the gossip about the "others."
Hear tales of the "Dastardly and Dire Events" that made the headlines of the Port Townsend Leader spanning several decades. Yes, real personalities will be revealed, as well as the circumstances that lead them to become famous.
Explore our fair city's architecture. Is it Italianate, Georgian or Victorian? All became prominent during the boom years. Learn the difference so you can identify the various styles yourself and amaze your friends and family with your knowledge!
The Jefferson County Historical Society conducts these same Living History Walking Tours every Saturday at 2 p.m. during the warmer summer months. These hour-long strolls through the downtown historic district begin at the Jefferson County Historical Society, 540 Water Street.
