Join us on this new tour offered during the Victorian Festival for the first time. On the bluff above the once rowdy seaport, see where early residents built fine houses, churches and social clubs. Stroll with a respectable Uptown 19th Century resident among the homes of early Port Townsend society. Enjoy a close-up look at the Victorian architecture that lines the historic streets of this National Historic District. You will discover who lived behind the Victorian doors, and the secrets they sought to keep. You will have the differences between the 'downtown' and 'uptown' ladies explained, and see why uptown residents were happy to live and shop "Up Here on the Hill".
Learn the true meaning of "Victorian" and see examples of some of the various architectural styles that make up the term so commonly applied to vintage homes.
Many of these historic treasures are restored to their former glory. Others await a new, adventurous owner who is devoted to bringing them back to life from behind modern siding, vanished gingerbread, and well-intentioned but historically inaccurate remuddlings.
You'll see exteriors of Queen Anne, Italianate, Greek Revival, Stick Style, American Gothic, Gothic Revival, Craftsman, Federal and Second Empire. Port Townsend is proud to present one of the largest and most varied concentrations of period architecture in the state of Washington.
The walk takes about 90 minutes.
